Accompany us on a private coach for a full day’s trip to Dresden. Having arisen as a phoenix from the ashes after the devastation of the Second World War and the decades of Communist rule that followed, Dresden has today reclaimed its title as “Florence on the Elbe”. Not only does it boast some of the best museums and one of the most beautiful baroque city centres in all of Europe, but it has also developed a vibrancy that is entirely contemporary.
We will walk you through the meticulously rebuilt historic Old Town, uncovering Dresden’s history as the residence of the Saxon kings. Visit the glorious baroque Zwinger, the former royal courtyard, as well as the palace with its Long Walk, an impressive 24,000 tiled porcelain frieze encapsulating nearly six centuries of Saxon history. See the famous Semper opera house and learn why King Augustus the Strong’s heart still supposedly beats in the crypt of the Catholic Hofkirche! Admire the newly rebuilt Church of our Lady (Frauenkirche), simultaneously a symbol of Dresden’s destruction in war and of its recovery since.
You will have ample time on your own to stroll along the “Balcony of Europe” above the Elbe River, explore one of the museums – including the brand new Daniel Libeskind-designed Museum of Military History, or shop at the markets.
